AUCKLAND CENTRE'S SEASON CONTROL OF WATER POLO The report of tho Auckland Centre of the N"\v Zealanel Amateur Swimming Association, which was presented at the annual meeting last evening, stated a very successful past season hnel been experienced from all points of view. The attendance of delegates was the largest recorded at a meeting of tho centre. The chairman of the executive, Mr. R. M. Sheffield, welcomed Mr. 10. It. Potter and congratulated him on his long association with the centre ns its president. Mr. SheOield also welcome-d new delegates, mentioning particularly Mr. S. Hollander (Ponsonby Club), n former chairman of the Canterbury Centre. The report stated that although in some instances financial loss was sustained on carnivals held by the clubs, the swimming attained a very high standard, and all races were keenly contested. During the seasem 12 clubs affiliated, this bfiing two more than tho number for the previous season. The clubs were Birkerihead-North-cote and Otahuhu. Two carnivals were held by the centre in January, the intermediate and junior championships being decided at the first, and the senior championships at the second. Both were a great success. Owing to the sheirtage of funds, it was at one stage thought impracticable to senel teams away to compete in the national championships. This difficulty was, however, overcome by the fine sporting action e>f the affiliated clubs in donating a sufficient amount to enable Auckland to be represented. The senior championships were held at Napier and the Auckland representatives won the Yaldhurst Shield with 01 points. At the junior and intermediate championships in Invercargill Aueklanel retained the War Memorial Shield with seven points. Tho past season was the fourth one in which the control of water polo was under the juriseliction eif the Auckland Water Polo Control Board. All clubs fielded .more teams anel took ft far creator interest in the game than formerly. Three competitions were dee ielecl during ihe season. Tho Ponsonby Club won both senior grades nnd Devonport won the junior graele. Unfortunately, owing to lack of fu'iels, Auckland was unable to field its best team at the New Zealand championship, but in the circumstances diel exceptionally well in being tunners-up to Canterbury. The financial statement showed that a profit of £lB 10s 4d was maelo on nil activities during the season. In moving the aeloption of the report and balance-sheet, Mr. E. H. Potter complimentexl the centre on its strong position, and wished it continued success during thenew season. The Waiteniata Club was granted permission lo hole! a carnival in the Tepiel Baths on November 28. The Mount Eden Club complaine>d eif the manner in which water-polo competitions were conducted last season by ihe Aueklanel Water Polo Control Board. The complaint was supported by sevetal speakers, the arrangement of games and the boarel's meetings being criticised. Suggestions were also made that no club shoulel be represented on the board and that the Water Polo Referees' Association should be rcviveel. It was decided to discuss the control of the game at the- next meeting eif the centre and to prepare reeominenelations for submission to (lie Water Polo Control Boarel.
