ELLERSLIE TRAINING
GOOD EFFORTS RECORDED CUP CANDIDATES PLEASE POROTITI GOES FREELY j Mellow going enabled the horses fo stride out freely in their work at Kllcrslio yesterday. The course proper, where the flags were out ,101t., was available for galloping, and some good efforts were recorded. On the course proper Spiral (light boy) easily beat Hawthorn (Clarke) over six furlongs in 1.2(1 Tlio first three were run lin 30 4-ss. and Spiral was too good for j Hawthorn, who was just a working mate | for the three-year-old. Spiral is an improved j colt for his recent racing and will not be : disgraced in the Great Northern Guineas, j Carfex (Vaughan), Red Sun (Clarke) and | Senegal (Ooulsbro) were in thai order at i the end of a mile in 1.45 3-5. Senegal led ! over the first half-mile in 51 l-;>s. and made ! a good pace for the handicap horses, run- ; ning the first furlong in 1- --as. Carfex ' was doing his work well throughout and | ran on strongly to finish ahead of Red Sun, j whoso rider was not bustling him. Carfex j and Red Sun are very fit and ;t should not i be for lack of condition if Ihey fail to run prominently in the MitcheLon ' up. Whenuakura (Wiggins) ran bis first two furlongs in 2t It-as, and completed half a mile al.mg the back in 5(1 'J .">s. V\*ln nuakuia is improving with every gallop and it will fake a good two-year-old to bring about his downfall in the "Welcome Stakes. Karangapai (McTavish) placed six furlongs behind in 1.20 1-5, while Co'trfhaven (11. Dulien) and Glenromney (Lardner) covered the same distance comfortably in 1.23 4-5. Five Furlongs by Pomp Grand Tonic (Murray) showed more speed than Bright Flower (Ti. Dulien) over four furlongs in 52 2-ss. X. ai! o Grey (Fuller) and Neil (Clarke) covered the last round of a good working effort in 2.10 4-5, the last seven furlongs in 1.41 1-5. Zane Grey is very fit and his condition and reliable jumping should assist him greatly in the Hunters' Steeplechase. Pomp (light boy), after running the first two in 25 15s, finished five furlongs in 1.5 3-5. Pomp is in great heart. View Halloo (Marsh), Lord Val (Wiggins) and All Humbug (GoulJbro) were in order at the end of a milo in 1.40 1-5, the first half in 52 l-ss. View Halloo revelled in his work and his rider was restraining him all the way up the straight. If pressed ho would have run a much better gallop. 110 is very fit and should run a. fine race in the Mitcheison Cup. My Money (Bigham), Gay Broney (McTavish) and Woo Pat (Murray) covered n mile in 1.-19 4-ss, the first half in 51 3-5. My Money is on the improve and Gay Broney should soon bo rewarded for his consistency. Weo Pat seems to have benefited by her racing at Paeroa and should bo difficult to beat in the Trial Hurdles. Psychologist (Vaughan), after running the first threo in 39 l-ss, completed six furlongs in 1.19 -1-5. Psychologist is carrying more condition than at any time previously but may require a few more gallops to bring him to his best. Mother Superior (Wiggins) sprinted half a milo along the back in 50 4-s's. Sh- is a good mover and may provide liiosr opposition for Whenuakura in the Welcome Stakes. Brown Lap (Lee) defeated Royal Appellant (Clarke) and Miss Re v.-a (mediumweight) over five furlongs in 1.0 3-5. Alpmus (Parsons) easily beat Mountain Breeze (McTavish) over five furlongs in 1.5 3-5. Alpinus showed n lot of dash in his work, running tho first two furlongs in 24 3-5.5. Porotiti and Chief Cook Porotiti (Marsh) shaded Chief Cook (Wiggins) over six furlongs in 1.19, the first three in 39 l-ss. Porotiti is a free worker and revelled in his task. Chief Cook also did his work well. He does not exert himself unless urged and will strip very fit to-morrow. Kiltowyn (Goldfinch) gave Jewelled Girdlo (Clarke) threo lengths start and had his measure at tho end of six furlongs in 1.10. Kiltowyn's time was slightly better than recorded, owing to commencing behind, and he acquitted himself well. He should bo ready to run a solid seven furlongs tomorrow. King Musk (Wiggins) covered a mile easily in 1.52. 1-5. King Musk has been showing signs of a cold but is full of muscle, and unless tho cold develops he should register a good performance in the Great Northern Guineas. Gay Rose (Burgess) ran half a mile in 52 3-Ss, and Morehu was timed to riAi fivo furlongs in 1.5 1-5. Baroscope (E. Manson). with Barograph (medium-weight) to assist over tho last half mile, traversed a round in 2.1S -'l-5. the last three furlongs in 3* 3-ss. Baroscope has come through his recent racing well and should be equal to a creditable showing in tiie Mitcheison Cup. Kairuri (Preston) worked over a mile and a-half, running the last round in 2.lt> 4-5. United (Vaughan) ran an easy five furlongs in 1.8 1-5, and Versant (Holland) covered half a mile in 53 l-ss. Echo Song (Clarke) shaded Royal Survey (Ooulsbro) over four furlongs in 51 4-ss. Seven Seas (Parsons), Red Flame (Wiggins) and Sporting Song (Murray) sprinted threo furlongs in 335, Seven Seas finishing just in front. Good Jumping Displays Coachman (D. .Tarvis) pleased moro than Mahkill (D. Craddock) in a bouf over four hurdles. Coachman showed no inclination to shirk the fences and may perform better at Ellerslio than at Cambridge, where he was early out of tho contest through failing to jump properly. Count LendrofT (Jennings) jumped _ the fences on the hill in good style. He is in great heart and will take a lot of beating in tho Hunters' Steeplechase. Riotous (('. Thomson). Hauwai (Tucker) and Patutahi 'Burgess) were sent round tho steeplechase fences. Riotous jumped well, but Hauwai unseated his rider at th» last fence. Riotous displayed distinct ability for a horse who was having his first effort over the local country. Although Musquil is better than generally credited and cannot be passed oyer lightly. D'Artatrnan should beat belaud most of the others.
