OTAHUHU WATER SUPPLY
INADEQUACY DISCUSSED REUNING OF THE MAINS Reports on tests carried out on the relining of sections of the water mams were submitted to the Otahuhu Borough Council last evening. One report stated that a section of main had been tested in its service condition before treatment, and it was found that leaks developed under a pressure of 30!b. to the square inch. It was not possible to secure a higher pressure without loss of water. ihe same section of pipe had been .scraped and relined and on test had then been found to .stand a pressure or Solb. per square inch without developing any leak. Mr. A. Sinclair asked if this meant that the fire-fighting efficiency of the mains was impaired. The Mayor, Mr. H. T. Clements, said ; there was no doubt there was a considerable leakage of water, but he did not think there was any loss of efficiency in the case of fire-fighting pressure.'When the pipes were taken out of the ground for tests there was more ; chance of the weak parts giving way under pressure. Particulars of the cost of relining the mains were submitted and referred to the Finance Committee i'or a report. A report by the pumping engineer stated that the flow of the well was not up to consumption requirements, and approximately 120,000 gallons weekly was drawn from the Manukau County supply. Replying to several points raised, the Mayor said the consumption had not increased over that of last year. It meant that there was not sufficient water in the well to feed the pumps. It would cost approximately £'&s a month to draw additional water from the Manukau County supply. Mr. Sinclair suggested that the council should consider making arrangements for the Manukau County to take over the supply to the railway workshops. It appeared that the Otahuhu borough was permanently to have to draw from outside sources, and it might be possible for the County Council to meet the Borough Council in the mattor. At present Otahuhu was selling ' water to the Railway Department for lOd per 1000 gaiions, and buying to maintain its consumption at Is 3d per 1000 gallons. The Mayor suggested thai the council should await developments in the Wnikato scheme before finalising any proposals, and this was agreed to. i
