UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
CONFERENCE SUGGESTED VIEWPOINT OF MAYOR WILLINGNESS TO CONVENE "If it is the general wish of local bodies and other responsible organisations interested 1 shall be pleased to convene a. conference, provided constructive proposals are prepared for discussion,' said the Mayor, Mr. G. \\. Hutchison, yesterday, referring to the suggestion that he should call a. conference of all bodies interested in unemployment.. The proposal that such a gathering should be held emanated from the Now Zealand Farmers' Union. "Similar conferences have been held previously without result, said Mr. Hutchison. "It is essential that delegates should come to such a conference prepared with definite proposals." GRADING OF MEN OCCUPATIONS AND ABILITY A promise of careful consideration was received by the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday from the Unemployment Board in reply to a suggestion that, an effort should be made to grade relief workers according to their occupations and ability generally and to provide work in which their skill could he utilised. The council decided to accept a tentative invitation by the Auckland provincial executive of the Farmers' Union to take part in a. suggested general conference on unemployment, although it was doubtful if definite practical conclusions would be reached by a conference at which many bodies were to be represented.
