POLICE RAID SEQUEL
PAKAPOO AT WELLINGTON FINES AMOUNT TO £791 [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION"] WELLINGTON, Thursday The well-organised police raid yesterday afternoon upon 16 Chinese premises in Haining, Taranaki and Vivian Streets, Wellington, in which it was suspected that pakapoo was being played, and where 43 arrests were mado, had its sequel in the Police Court to-day. Fines totalling £791 were imposed by Mr. E. Page, S.-M. On charges of keeping common gaming houses, 15 Chinese were each fined £SO, in default three months' imprisonment. • Several Chinese were found without lawful oxcuso in a common gaming house and each was fined £3. * Europeans who were arrested on a similar charge were lined £1 each. Senior-Sergeant Scott mentioned that wives of some of tho men had complained bitterly that tho money they earned was going to pakapoo instead of to their homes. As an indication of the extent of pakapoo activities, he added that during a fortnight when some of tho pakapoo houses wero closed following police action, the hotel takings in the neighbourhood had risen by £2O.
