SEASON DRAWING TO CLOSE The 1933 Rusby season is gradually drawing to a close in tho country centres, "in many of which finality has already been reached. Tho following results of matches played on Saturday were forwarded by correspondents of the Herald: — Hamilton.—The final games played under the auspices of tho Hamilton Rugby Union in the 1933 season took place when the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company's fifteen defeated the Public Service representatives by 13 points to 3. Playing at JNgaruawahia, Taupiri thirds beat Hamilton fourths by 11 points to 8. Te Aroha. —A Thames Valley team representing the Post and Telegraph Department in that area defeated the Thames Valley Power Board's team in a challenge match for the Sprague Shield in the Herries' Memorial Park. The game from the outset was one-sided, the challengers fielding a Bplendid line of backs, who experienced little difficulty in penetrating the opposition. Sweetman and Wilson were towers of strength to the lost and Telegraph team, and from them emanated most of the scoring moves. Power Board was always on the defensive and its only points came from a couple of penalty goals from good positions. The final score, 28 to 6 in Post and Telegraph's favour, was a fair indication of tho play. Mr. S. lomich was referee. Kaltala.—After holding tho Brake Shield for three seasons, the Mangouui County junior representatives lost to Aor thorn Wairoa at Kaitaia, tho score being 16 points to 13 in the challengers' favour. For Northern Wairoa, Woodmasa scored twico and Massey and Clements each notched a try, while Millich and Walters converted a try. Mangonui's points were scored with tries by Lambley, Donaldson and Whitefield, Mockett and Martin adding the major points to two of these. Mr. R. Harding, of Dargaville, was roferee. Rotorua.—ln the tribal Rugby football match played at Arawa Park between representatives of the Arawa and Waikato Maoris in a contest for the Tinui-Maniapoto Cup, Arawas defeated the challengers by 21 points to 6. Whangarel The season was closed with two junior matches. In the final of tho junior knock-out between Onernhi and Hukerenui, the latter won by G points (tries by H. and R. Rouse) to 3 points (try by Hutchinson). These teams drew on the previous Saturday. A third grc.de match was played between the third grade representative team and a team selected from the remainder of the third grade players, resulting in a win for the representative team by 16 points to 0. A very interesting match was played at Hikurangi in aid of the funds of tho Whangarei. branch of the St. John Ambulanco Brigade, there being a large attendance. As a result of the match the brigade's funds will benefit to the extent of about £ls. The game was between the Hikurangi senior Rugby championship team and a combined team from another code, resulting in a win for the Rugby team by 4 points to 3. Taylor was referee, WELLINGTON DEFEATED HAWKE'S BAY REGAINS FORM [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] HASTINGS, Sunday Playing Rugby reminiscent of their heydfiy the Hawke's Bay Rugby representatives beat Wellington by 23 points to 20 yesterday afternoon. At one period tho ccore stood at 23—8. Wellington seemed tired, but the Hawke's Bay players were inspired. Their defence and attack were both magnificent. There was brilliant sunshine, with a slight breeze, and the ground was fairly hard. The attendance was not particularly large. Hawke's Bay won the toss.' Page and Lilburne early £ave a taste of Wellington's quality by initiating a series of fine pasning bouts. Swift pouncing by Mataira, however, stifled Kilby. The next try was a brilliant one, Bradley cutting through the whole dofence from Wellington's twenty-five and sending Rolls across unopposed . Bradley converted. The visiting backs came again with a passing move, but tho Hawke's Bay tackling was impenetrable. All at once the fortunes changed, Wellington's failure to tackle allowing Cochrano.to pick up in the loose and send Rolls over unopposed. Rolls converted and at half-time the score was:—• Hawke's Bay. 17; Wellington, 8. Hawke's Bay scored again five minutes after resuming, Reaney crossing from a forward scramble. His kick failed. Thrice the visiting backs nearly crossed, but the Hawke's Bay tackling was deadly. Barry went off injured, McNeil replacing him. Rolls was the next scorer, after Smith had again made a great run through tho halfhearted opposition. Grant's kick failed. After repeated Hawke's Bay attacks the visitors came up strongly, Lilburnc just missing a potted goal, but he succeeded a moment later. Wellington was now much livelier, attacking more enterprisingly, but it could not mako much impression upon the home defence. At last a deserved try came, Page crossing from a brilliant rearguard movement; Fuller failed at goal. In the next two minutes Fuller scored with a spectacular run from half-way, and then converted. With five minutes remaining;, the paco was terrific, the Wellington backß working excellently. A penalty enabled the visitors to clear from a throatr/iing Hawke's Bay attack, and Wellington was aggressive when the final whistle blew.

WIN TOR AUCKLAND COLTS TATJPIRI TEAM DEFEATED [from our own correspondent] TAUPIRI, Saturday The Auckland colts' team which visited Ngaruawahia to play a combined team front Taupiri defeated the home side by 29 points to 23. Taupiri won the toss. Early in the first half a parsing rush from near Taupiri's twenty-five resulted in a try by Gooch, who converted. Ilimmer next crossed Taupiri's line, but the kick failed. Brii:sden broke away, and,_ beating Taupiri's fullback, scored close in. Gooch converting. Taupiri's first ecore came as the result of a fine piece of work by Davies, which resulted in Carlson securing a try. which Catley converted. Shortly _ afterwards Catley failed with a free kick. Just before half-time a passing rush by Auckland brought its score to IG, Hay securing a try which Gooch again converted. At half-time the score was:—Aucklnnd, 16; Taupiri, 5. When play was recommenced Davies brought Taupiri's score to 8 with a penalty goal. Taupiri was now pressing hard and Carlson scored another try, which Davies converted, the visitors thus having a mart%h of only three pointß at tliiß stage of the game. The tide turned again, however, when Auckland scored two successive tries from passing rushes from about halfway. Gooch secured the first of these and converted it. Ellis the second, Gooch's kick failing. Souter gained - tb« next well-earned try for Taupiri, and Davies converted. Ejlio retaliated for Auckland with a try which waß also converted. SOUTH AUCKLAND MATCH MANUKAU, DEFEATS WAJ UKU The filial of the South Auckland int«runion championship was played at Papakura on Saturday. ManuknXi beat Waiuku by 21 points to 3 in a fust forward gamo. For Manukau, Somervillo and Sinton were nlwnys prominent and E. Cossey filled tho position of halfback brilliantly. The scorers for Mnnukau were Calligan, Halliwell, Robs, Hogins and Cossey, while Halliwell converted three and kicked a penalty. For Waiuku, Woderspoon scored a try. The South Auckland championship wns formerly decided this season and Pukekoho was declared the winner, having beaten the three other teams, Manukau, Waiuku and Franklin. A protest was lodged by Waiuku against the Pukekohe team playing a footballer who lived in tho Frankliy territory, and it was upheld by the South Auckland Rugby Union, which imposed forfeiture of tho championship on tho Pukekohe Union and arranged that the Maiu>Jfau and Waiuku teams, which had both beaten Franklin, but had drawn against each other, should play of! the final. Tho winning of the championship should act as a stimulus to football in Manuka,u, which is in its first year ns a complete sub-union after a period of difficulty, during which several club teams played in the Pukekohe Union's comP<3 A curtain-raiser between the Eden third grade open team and Manukau juniors resulted in a win for the visitors by 3 points to 0.
