MONEY FROM FOOTBALL

CHRIST CHURCH'S HARVEST PROFITABLE VISITORS The Ranfurly Shield football match last Saturday was worth real money to Christchurch shopkeepers, restauranteurs, and hotel proprietors. If thero were a Ranfurly Shield match every Saturday, with a similar invasion of supporters, these men would bo happy, says tho Sun. The Southland men wanted something to eat; many of them wanted something to drink, stronger than tea; and some even bought clothing. Not every Southlander purchased a suit, but most of them had money in their pockets, and weren't particular about keeping it there. Retailers and vendors of refreshments reaped tho benefit. It is impossible to estimate accurately just how much was spent by tho Southerners in Christchurch, but it must have been a substantial sum. It is seldom, these days, that tho hotel bars reap such a harvest as they did on Saturday afternoon. Canterbury's possession of tho Ranfurly Shield is meaning good business for tho Railway Department. More special trains are to be run at the coming week-end for to-morrow's game between Canterbury and Otago at Lancaster Park—ono from Dunedin and ono from Timaru. In addition to these two specials, local services will be augmented.
