Miss Olive Aldridge, of Masterton, arrived in Auckland this week to take up a course of training at St. Helens Hospital. Miss Oonagh Zicsler, Gonville, Wanganui, is at present in Auckland, taking part, in the Girl Guides training camp activities. Mr. Gordon Elliott, of tho Department of Agriculture, Blenheim, and Mrs. Elliott, who have been spending n holiday with Mr. Elliott's parents nt "Redmount," Papakura, are now the guests of Mrs. G. Wild, of Thames k Valley. Miss Thelma Smith, daughter of Mr. J. Smith, managing director of tho Australian Glass Manufacturers' Company, Limited, is due in Auckland cm Saturday by the Mariposa from Sydney. Miss Sniith is on her way to New York /V on a holiday visit. » '{; - Bishop arid. Mrs. Cherrington, of Hamilton, are visiting Wellington in < connection with the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Church of England in New Zealand and various provincial boards. They are guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. Hall. Miss Aliion Kirkcaldie, Wellington, who was runner-up for the Fogarty Scholarship conferred by the British Drama League, left Auckland for London yesterday by the Tainui, to study at the Central School for Speech Training and Dramatic Art. Professor Anne Strong, Dean of the Faculty of Homo Science at Otago University, is the guest of Mrs. J. Kalman, Upland Road, Remuera. Professor String, who is the recipient of a Carnegie grant, proceeds to the United States by . tho Mariposa on Saturday. ' At tho last meeting of the Community Club held in the Greenlano Congregational Church Hall, a very interesting address on a nation without a country (namelv, the Jews) was given by Mrs. G. A. Green. A pianoforte solo was rendered by Miss Una Vauglien. During afternoon tea the president, Sirs. Joll,,,announced that at tho next meeting there would be a roll-call and social afternoon. Tho wedding is to take place at HampsteadJ England, to-day, of Mrs. Margaret Tolhurst, to Dr. Teddy Morgan, a Welsh Rugby international, famous as the scorer of the try which led to the only victory against the Ail Blacks in 1900. Mrs. Tolhurst, who is ' well known in Wellington, is the widow of Dr. Alec Tolhurst, whose death took place during tho war while on active service. The monthly At Homo cf tho Garrick Dramatic Society was held at the Garrick Rooms on Monday evening and was :i very pleasant function. _ M usical litems and dancing were enjoyed. Amorg the artists who assisted in making the evening so successful w*ere Miss Rita McCullav, Miss Minna Mays, Miss Joan Airev, Sir. Sam Stephenson, Sir. RawK01) and Sir. Sliddleton. Those present -"included. Mrs. Airey, Mrs: Blarkie, Sirs. Robinson, Sliss I. A social and danco was held at Glen Eden on Tuesday evening in connection with the Glen Eden branch of the
• Douglas Credit Association. There was an attendance of about 100. A programme of selected items was presented, the vocalists being Sirs. Gilbert and Misses J. and D. Douglas. Instrumental numbers were rendered by Messrs. E. Miller, Monteith, Bragg and H. Smith, and Mr. Pearson gave a recitation. Mrs. Miller and Mr. H. Smith were the accompanists. Short addresses on currency matters were given by Messrs. Morrish arid H. Douglas. Dancing was enjoyed and supper was served by the ladies.
The concluding social of the Ellerslie ex-SerVieemeh's Club was held in the Masonic tlall. There was a large attendance of members and friends, including representatives from kindred clubs. A varied programme of cards, music and dancing was enjoyed. A five hundred tournament was keenly contested, the prize--winners being Mrs. A. Prior and Mr. L. H. Wilkin. Songs were given by Mrs. Lan Simson and Mr. J. Crocombe, and novelty entertainment by Mr. Ivan Taylor. Much amusement was created during a novelty dressing competition, couples having to garb themselves in paper costumes, which had to be fashioned on the spot. The prizes were won by Miss M. Clark and Mr. K. Clark.
