HOSTILITY TO CANDIDATE

LYTT ELTON BY-ELECTION QUESTIONS AT WOOLSTON [by telegraph—press association] CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesdny The independent Labour candidate for the Lyttelton seat, Mr. E. L. Hills, met a hostile audience at Woolston this evening. He had a quiet meeting until question time and then much hostility to his candidature was shown. In reply to,one questioner, who suggested that somebody was finding funds for Mr. Hills to stand and split the Labour vote, Mr. Hills said he was being supported by men who believed in independence. He also declared, "Already I have been offered a sum of money to withdraw from the contest, and the offer did not como from the Coalition."
