CAMBRIDGE FREEMASONS [from our own correspondent] CAMBRIDGE, Tuesday On Saturday the celebrations in connection with the 50th anniversary of the local branch of the Masonic Order, Lodge Alpha, were brought to a eloso with an "At Home" in the Parish Hall, there being a large attendance. Earlier in the week a banquet was held, among the visitors being V.W., Bro. G. Barchiv, grand secretary of Auckland, and V.W., Bro. C. L. Macdiarmid, of Hamilton, A.P.G.M. Although Lodge Alpha celebrated its 50th anniversary Freemasonry in Cambridge dates back to 1865. The first lodge, under the Irish constitution, was established in 18(36, but when the gold rush to Thames set in during 1868 the lodge wont out of existence, most of its members going to Thames and setting up the Lodge of Light there. There was a space of years in the records of Lodge Alpha until 1883, when the lodge was revived under the English constitution. In 1892 the lodge transferred to the Grand Lodge of New Zealand. Three years ago the members erected a fine modern temple at the corner of Queen and Bryce Streets and to-day the membership stands at 100.
