LIFE SAVING

AWARDS DURING SEASON The report of tho Auckland Head Centre of the Royal Life-Saving Society to be presented at the annual meeting to-morrow states that a total of 12G2 awards was issued during tho past season. This total was made up as follows:—Brenststroke, 289; elementary, 302; proficiency, 175; bronze medallion, 303; bar for bronze medallion, 11: surf medallion, 22; surf instructor's certificate, 80; honorary instructor's certificate, 2; nward of merit, 73; bar for award of merit, 2- diploma, 8. Two members of the Takapuna Surf Club, G. Cameron and S. Bolland, cam© forward for the examination for tho diploma and results from the Central Executive in London were being awaited. The highest number of passos for the secondary and high schools was obtained by the Diocesan High School, with 33 passes, the Takapuna Grammar School being secorid with 31 passes, after heading the list for a number of years. Afnlialion was granted to the Girl Guides' Association* MariSst Brothers' Colle'ge, Brown's Bay Surf Club, Birkenhead SWimming Club, and Milford Girls' Surf Club. Tho Speedo Shield competition held fi-fc Tauranga, was' a great success, five affiliated surf clubs competing. Tho shield was won by Milford (Men's) Surf Club, Takapuna being second. The Pirate Shippe Plate, held at Milford, was won by Milford. The Laidlaw Cup was annexed by Takapuna A, 94J points. The gold medal presented by Mr, R. Laidlaw for ;the champion beltman of the Auckland Province, was Avon by C. J. Sidford, of Takapuna Club, with the time of Sm 13s. During the pant season, the society was •successful in obtaining permission from the Auckland City Council, to control surf,and sea bathing on all beaches under the jurisdiction of the City Council. Patrols were supplied by surf clubs each week-end, and also for private picnics. Two members of the executive were highly honoured by tho Central Executive, London, Messrs. A. A. Dicker and M. Champion, who were presented with tho Distinguished Service Medal for their pest work. * The balance-sheet shows the centre to be in a "fairly good position.
