SONGS OF THE BUSH

By MARGARET HARVEY (aged 17). 14 D-uart Avenue, Mt. Albert, Auckland. (Original.)

From 'midst tho golden ko\\*hai blooms A crystal note I heard one morn', Like some quaint bushland fairj T .'s lay, Tho bellbird's joyous song was borne. With one wild burst of music sweet A tui hymned the dying day; I heard his liquid notes resound, But, fearing me, he flew nway. Strange shadows flitted through the ferns, While softly from the forest deep The morepork's ghostly wail rang out — Then silence—and 1 fell asleep.
