Mrs. J. Gillies, of Melbourne, is at the Central Hotel. Mrs. Cuthbert McCaw, Mount Eden Road, left for a short visit to liotorua yesterday. Mrs. J. Myers and her two daughJ tors, Noni and Nancy, left by the limited last evening for the South. Miss Lorna Martin, of Bcalcy Avenue, Christchurch, has returned after a visit to the liotorua district. Miss van Asclie van Wijck will arrive from New Plymouth to-morrow and will bo the guest of Mrs. James Johnston, of Omahu Road, Remuera, during her stay in Auckland. Miss Elizabeth Harris, of Christchurch, who has been on a visit to Fiji, will roturn to New Zealand on Monday and will spend' some weeks in the North Island before returning to the South. The Ellerslie Girls' Friendly Society, section 13, held another of their popular monthly "Old Time" dances recently. The supper arrangements were in the hands of the committee, consisting of Mesdames Trebilcock, Cumming, Greenwood, Marshall, Mclntyre, Weston, Tilby and Misses Hutton and Mclntyre. An " expression " afternoon was held at the Women's Progress Club at the Higher Thought Temple. Altogether 34 members spoke, several voicing their deep appreciation of the club's ideals, which had helped them to gain a truer perspective of life in these times of difficulties and disappointments and of the great assistance which the club's fellowship and teaching had been to them. The Ngataringa Tennis Club held a bridge evening in the club's pavilion on Thursday in aid of the United Services Queen, Miss E. Burges Watson. The ladies present were Mrs. Browne, Mrs. Mair, Mrs. Hooker, Mrs. Bush, Mrs. Spinley, Mrs. Charlton, Mrs. Dance, Mrs. Pollard. Mrs. Grinter, Mrs. Byrne, Mrs;. Connell, Miss Naish, Miss Lund, Miss Bertrand. The prize winners were Mrs. Mair and Mrs. Spinley. The monthly meeting of St. Mary's Mothers' Union branch was held on Wednesday, when a large number of members was present. Canon W. Fancourt admitted one new *member and gave an inspiring address. After tea was served a short business meeting was held. Mrs. Jones, from the Dock Street Mission, gave an interesting address on the history of the mission and its past and present activities. Thanks to speakers closed the meeting. The St. Columba Grey Lynn branch of the Mothers' Union hold a social afternoon in the parish hall, Surrey Crescent, the New Lynn branch being its guests. The hall was decorated for the occasion with bowls of spring flowers. Vocal items were contributed by Mesdames Henderson. Harold King, Piatt, and Master Billio Peck and recitations by Miss Phyllis Moore and Miss Valerie O'Brien. Mesdames McKinney and Barrett acted as accompanists. A competition was won by Mrs. Barrett (New Lynn). At the fortnightly meeting of the Community Club held in the Green Lane Congregational Church Hall, a large gathering of women listened to the very interesting address given by Miss Law, senior department secretary of the Y.W.C.A. Her subject was the activities of the association. Mrs. Joll presided. Vocal solos were rendered by Mrs. E. P. Gifford and Mrs. H. B. Scott. Before afternoon tea was served the president proposed a vote of sympathy for the family of the late Mrs. Ford, who had done valuable work for the club. Members of the Birkenhead branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union met at the home of Mrs. Jory. The president, Mrs. Brocklehurst, presided. Mrs. Gatman's name was added, as vice-president, to the list of officers. A collection was taken for the Maori fund. Suggestions to increase funds for the work were given and it was decided that the next meeting should take tho form of a "pay up" social, at which there would be a stall of saleablo goods. Mrs. Brocklehurst gave a report of the recent Alliance Convention. Mrs. Guy Williams (Masterton), Mrs. J. C. Templer tfWaimate), Mrs. H. Dodgshun (Dunedin), Miss Olive Kay (Dunedin), and Miss Bessie Gaisford (Marton),-members of the New Zealand ladies' golf team chosen to play Australia, will leave Auckland for Australia on August 16. The ladies' championship golf meeting of Australia will be played at the Victoria Golf Club's links, Cheltenham, Victoria, from August 28 till September 8, inclusive, and the Australia-New Zealand match will be played on the same links between those dates. The Mothers' Club of the. Y.W.C.A. held a social afternoon this week, which was presided over by Mrs. Dicken. Miss Bentham, general secretary of the Y.W.C.A., welcomed the newly-elected officers and the president received a bouquet. Items were contributed by the following: —Songs, Mesdames Clarke, Collier and McConnell; recitation, Mrs. W 7 ilton; instrumental duets, Mesdames Proberg and Simmonds; violin solo, Mr. Neville Walker. The accompanists were Mrs. Jury, Mrs. Forrost and Mr. Hutton. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Mann, Hartwell and Isherwood.
