BUTTER QUOTAS
Sir, —Apparently your correspondent, Jlr. William S. Watson, fails utterly to consider the hundreds of farmers, like myself, who are just existing. His advocacy of the quota is all very well for the man who, in the bad times, has been able to afford a trip Home, but it's mighty cold ccmfort to men working hard to attain a high standard and increase production to know that their efforts may in the near future prove their own undoing. Mr. Watson's suggested improvements are excellent, but where is the money to come from ? I have a first-class herd sire and some good cows, my cowshed is as clean as plenty -of water and a broom can make it, and my milking gear is well and truly scoured. More than that I and the hundreds of others cannot do. The British farmer has my sincere sympathy, but I would suggest to Mr. Watson that he take a line from the British Minister of Agriculture and fight for his own crowd; charity begins at home. Otorohanga. W. F. Anderson.
Sir,—Mr. W. S. Watson, in your issue of Wednesday, gives his ideas on the butter question. There is no doubt about the cleanliness, but when it comes to the firebrand on all cows tinder 3001b. butter-fat, ho evidently wante to ruin half the dairy farms in New Zealand. You can take any district you like where herd-testing is in full swing and see the returns. In the Waerenga district the first man is an average' of 3031b. per cow; our lot of close on 70 cows, factory returns were just over 3001b. per cow, average. I know' dairies where 50 cows turn out about 13 gallons of cream a day for one month. Still that man is making a living with sheep as a sideline. Would the Government be prepared to support all dairy farmers whose cows did not do 3001b. butter-fat. One remedy would ,be to firebrand all culls and allow no "three-teaters" in a salevard without the brand. You would then clean out thousands of cows each year. Te Kauwhata. F. B. Anderson.
