THEFT OF WALLET
INCIDENT AT ROTORUA OFFENDER SENT TO PRISON [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] ROTORUA, Friday In the Rotorua Magistrate's Court to-day, William Wilson Sutherland, described as a bushman, was charged with the theft of a wallet containing £l2 15s Bd, the property of Ernest Edgar Tatam, carrier, of Whakatane. Accused pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Carroll said that Tatam came to Hotorua yesterday. Accused asked him for a cigarette paper. -Tatam replied that he was a non-smoker and as accused was walking away Tatam felt something extracted from his hip pocket. He immediately missed his wallet. When accused was questioned about the matter he denied all knowledge, but tho wallet was noticed under his armpit. Tatam caught hold of accused and held him until the arrival of Constable Kelly, who arrested him. On inquiries being made, continued the seniorsergeant, it was found that Sutherland had mentioned to a local bushman that the wallet was protruding from Tatam's pocket and it would be easy to get it. Accused was well known to the police. He had a long list of convictions. A sentence of three months' imprisonment, with hard labour, was imposed.
