CRICKET IN ENGLAND

LATEST COUNTY MATCHES OUTSTANDING FEATURES BODY-LINE CONTROVERSY By Telegraph— Association— Copyright LONDON. Auk. 1 There were several outstanding features-ill the latest series of county cricket matches. W. Hammond, ill the match at Bristol, between Gloucestershire and Lancashire, became the first batsman in England this season to reach 2000 runs. When I). T>. .Tardine was fielding at the Oval, for Surrey against Kent, he was struck by a bull below one knee. He fell like a log, and was assisted off the ground. A nerve in the leg is affected, and at present the Surrey and English captain is forced to hobble on two sticks. Of the batsmen who made centuries Ashdown (Kent) led tho way with 178. Others were:—Squires and Barling (Surrey), Cook and James Langridge (Sussex), Hammond (Gloucester), E.' Tyklcsley (Lancashire), Armstrong (Leicester), Leyland • (Yorkshire), Walters and M. (Worcester). Three bowlers in tho Middlesex v. Derby, match at Chesterfield secured splendid figures, and K. Fames, who exploited the body-line in the Cambridge v. Oxford University match at Lord's in tho second week of July, came out with the fine average of 13 wickqts for 98 for Essex against Somerset. Body-line Controversy There was an exciting finish in the game at Nottingham between Leicestershire and Notts, tho captains of which, E. W. Dawson and A. W. Carr, had agreed not to countenance body-line bowling. Declaring their second innings closed Leicestershire left Notts to obtain 162 runs in a limited time. Notts was still seven runs short when stumps were drawn, with five wickets down. Notts \<-on by 100 runs on the first innings. Tho Evening News says: " Carr's statement is the first big step against body-line bowling, and is bound to influence the Marylebone Cricket Club. It is understood that Carr in his reply to Marylebone's invitation to county captains to express their opinions about body-line bowling will assert that headhigh bowling should be prt>hibited. Carr will quote four instances of batsmen being struck on the head." The paper comments that head-high bowling to a leg-side field is essentially body-line.
