THE IDEAL RATEPAYER
BIRKENHEAD EXAMPLE COMPANY FORGOES REBATE The Colonial Sugar Refining Company, Limited, is the largest ratepayer in the borough of Birkenhead and the most prompt payer of rates. It has been the invariable custom of the company to remit the amount of the rates upon receipt of the demand. This procedure again has been followed this year, and the company has also declined to avail itself of the 5 per cent rebate allowed by the council for payment within 30 days of the due date. In remitting its cheque for £1927 16s 7d for rates for the current year f the letter from the company, received by the Borough Council last evening, stated that in the interests of the borough it had decided to waive the right, on this occasion, respecting the 5 per cent rebate allowed to ratepayers meeting their obligations to the council within 30 days. The letter pointed out, however, that the principle 6f altering the price of water per meter to the detriment of large users such as the company, was viewed with some apprehension, especially at a time when, in common with other ratepayers, expectations were held of reduced rates. The hope was expressed that this aspect would receive consideration when deciding upon the rates next year. The Mayor, Mr. G. Mills, commented upon the very generous and sympathetic attitude of the company toward the borough's financial position. The whole question of water charges would be reviewed before next year. It was decided to~write to the company expressing great appreciation at who had been done in assisting the borough and council.
