AUCKLAND AND HAMILTON SIX TRIPS ELIMINATED FORMER SCALE OF FARES APPEAL BOARD'S DECISION i The deletion of six service-car trips daily on the Auckland-Hamilton route will" result from a reserved decision given by the Transport Appeal Board yesterday. Five appeals, heard as a group, are dealt with in the decision. The Railways Board objected to the 8 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. trips from Auckland and the 11.15 a.m. and 3 p.m. trips from Hamilton conducted by Markov's Motor Services, Limited, and Newby's Motors, Limited. Markov's Motor" Services, Limited, objected to the 7.45 a.m. trip from Auckland and the 3 p.m. trip from Hamilton run by Gibson's Motors, Limited. There were a'lso appeals by Markov's and Newby's for the restoration of certain trips eliminated by the Central Licensing Authority from tueir respective time-tables. The Railways Board also appealed against the reduction of the motor servico fares between Auckland and Hamilton from lis Gd single and 21s return to IDs single and 10s return, which were approved by the Central Licensing Authority. Duplication With Trains Following are the details of the decision of the hoard: — "The S a.m. trip from Auckland is { unnecessary, inasmuch as a motor ser- j vice leaves Auckland for Hamilton at ; 7 a.m., and a train leaves Auckland for j Frankton Junction at the same hour, j followed by the Tauranga express train at 9.8 a.m. The 8 a.m. service-car has no connection to make nt Hamilton, except one for New Plymouth, which could, with almost equal convenience, be made by the 7 a.m. service-car. "The 6.30 p.m. trip from Auckland is not required, for a reasonably fast train leaves at 4.20 p.m. (6.30 p.m. on Saturday), and is followed by the limited express at 7 p.m. daily, except on Saturday. "The 11.15 a.m. trip from Hamilton is not necessary to fill the gap between the 9.35 a.m. train from Frankton Junction and the 12.53 p.m. Rotorua express train from Hamilton. The 3 p.m. trip from Hamilton unnecessary duplicates the service afforded by the 3.4 p.m. Tauranga express train from Hamilton. "The two trips of Gibson's Motors, Limited, to which objection is taken cover tho first stage of a service to New Plymouth, and the last stage of a service from New Plymouth. It appears to this board that the 7 a.m. servicecar affords a sufficiently close connection at Hamilton on tho outward journey to New Plymouth, and that tho 3.4 p.m. Tauranga express train from Hamilton affords a most suitable and convenient connection with the servicecar from New Plymouth. These two trips are, in the opinion of this board, unnecessary. Hamilton Connections "It was suggested at the hearing that tho proprietor of one of the New Plymouth services might apply to have his departure timo from Hamilton altered. This matter is not at present before us, but it appears to us that, if one New Plymouth service were timed to connect "directly at Hamilton with tho 7 a.m. car from Auckland, and tho other to connect at Hamilton with tho 9.8 a.m. Tauranga express train, a better spaced time-table would be provided for New Plymouth passengers. "The appeals by the Railways Board aro accordingly allowed, to tho extent of deleting the four trips in question from the Markey and Newby timetables. The appeal of Markov's Motor Services, Limited, against Gibson's Motors, Limited, is allowed, to the extent of deleting the two trips in question from the latter's time-table. "The appeals by Markov's Motor Services, Limited, and Newby's Motors, Limited, against tho conditions of their own respective licences are disallowed. "The appeal by tho Railways Board for the restoration of the former scale of fares, viz., lis Gd single and 21s return, is allowed. The question of the needs of intermediate passengers does not arise in these appeals, for they are effectively met by the existing through services by road and rail and by a number of local services." APPEALS PROM GISBORNE ONE LICENCE REVOKED A decision on two appeals affecting the Gisborne district was announced by the Transport Appeal Board yesterday. The No. 4 Transport Licensing Authority granted a licence to Mrs. Bertha Wilcox to operate a passenger servico between Gisborne and Tolaca Bay, and granted a licence to the Dueo Motor Servico and Robb's Motors to operate a passenger service between Gisborne and Ruatoria. Tho Duco-Robb combination sought tho revocation of tho licence granted to Mrs. Wilcox, and Mrs. Wilcox sought an extension of her licence to include Tokomaru Bay. The board allowed the appeal of the Duco-Robb combination and disallowed the appeal of Mrs. Wilcox. It expressed tho opinion that the traffic was not sufficient to maintain two separata services. It considered a service, such as was required on the Gisbornc-Ruatoria route, which is 85 miles long, could bo better provided by tho Duco-Robb combination.
