ALL-NIGHT PARKING
VEHICLES WITHOUT LIGHTS DANGERS OF PRACTICE ; A dangerous practice that is bec-ora-ing common in a number of city and suburban streets is the all-night park* ing of unlighted motor-cars. The owner* responsible are taking a grave risk of their cars being stolen, while v there is also a danger of other cars colliding with the unlighted vehicles. All-night parking is contrary to city, and suburban by-laws and in the past occasional prosecutions have helped to keep most streets clear of unlighted vehicles. The chief traffic inspector of th» Auckland City Council,' Mr. G. RHogan, said yesterday that in many cases cars wero left parked in the streets until a late hour outside house 3 where the owners wero spending the evening. Parking for an extended period was permissible in these circumstances, provided sufficient lights wero left burning, or the car was close to a street light. In the past, however, owners who left their cars all night on the street without lights had been prosecuted successfully. lliero have been several instances in which cars loft on the road regularly each night have been noticed by intending and stolen at a favourable opportunity.. Even if a car ,\* locked, a thief who knows he has unlimited time, as the owner is in tlio habit of "garaging" the car on the street, cau frequently pick the lock at his leisure and later drive away quietly. ./ The danger of collision with an unlighted car has also to be considered. In heavy rain or fog, a serious collision with an unlighted vehicle is possible.
