PROSPERITY WEEK

MANY ATTRACTIONS SIDESHOWS IN THE CITY ARABIAN NIGHTS BALL As a prelude to Prosperity Week, which will officially open on Monday, se\oral attractions have been arranged for intervening days. A note of gaiety will bo added to the city this evening by the presence of a number of sideshows, including a merry-go-round and a Punch and Judy show, in a portion of the Civic Square site. These sideshows, which will be conducted throughout the week, have been arranged by the Transport Queen Committee. A community singing gathering, in aid of the Electricity and Tramways Queen, will be held this evening in the Town Hall from 8.30 to 10 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Russell will be the song leaders. To-morrow afternoon the first motor road race to be held in Now Zealand will take place over a two-mile circuit at Orakei, the event being organised in support of the Transport Queen. In addition to car and cycle races and acceleration and braking tests, an "old crocks" race, intended for cars built before 1914, should create great interest. A novelty event will be the appearance of an aeroplane which will drop surprise packets. Two functions which should result in a considerable augmentation of funds will take place on Monday evening. Tho Auckland Wrestling Association has decided to donate all profits from the match between George Walker and Harry Mamos in the Town Hall to the Sports Queen funds, and in the adjoining concert chamber, the subject "That we should under no circumstances fight for King and Country" will be debated by strong teams from the Auckland Literary and Debating Societies' Union. It was the debating of this subject at several English universities which caused so much comment recently. Details of the arrangements being made for the Arabian Nights ball in the Town Hall on Thursday evening show that the function will be one of the most brilliant and spectacular balls held in Auckland for many years. Every effort will be made to capture the atmosphere of the East. The whole of the main Town Hall will be draped in scenes representing life in Arabia, India, China and Persia, and for this purpose over 7500 square feet of material will be used. The entire stage will be occupied by the palace, a structure 50 feet high, replete with minarets, archways and exotic furnishings. In these colourful settings the kaleidoscopic effect of the innumerable types of fancy costume worn by those present should form a remarkable spectacle. Augmented Dixieland and Peter Pan bands will supply the music for the evening. Numerous other attractions will be held during the week, and tho effort will culminate with the crowning ceremony and pageant on August 11. In connection with the window display contest being held during the coming week it is announced that tho dato of the judging has been postponed to next Thursday.
