CARNIVAL AT OPOTIKI
DISPLAYS BY MAORIS [by telegraph—own correspondent] OPOTIKI, Thursday A crowd estimated at nearly .3000 gathered in front of the War Memorial, Church Street, this afternoon to witness picturesque haka and poi competitions by bands of Maoris from the Urc-wcra, Whananapanui and Whakatohea tribes as part of the Maori contribution to the carnival week. The Maoris were in old-time native costume and caused intense interest. Several Maori ovens had been erected in the motorists' camping ground, where two bullocks, four pigs and large quantities of potatoes and kumaras were cooked in native fashion, numbers of Europeans being supplied with dinner. A solid silver cup, donated for the haka competition by Mr. S. Moody, Mayor of Opotiki, was won by the Waioeka team, with Te Kaha second. The poi dancing was won by Te Kaha.
