SATURDAY'S PROSPECTS HUNT CUP STEEPLES CONTEST CHANCES OF ST. WARRIGAL' BY ARCHER Competition at tho first totalisator meeting of the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Hunt Club at Rotorua on Saturday will be confined to horses trained on country tracks, and, as there are a good many unknown quantities engaged, tho racing may produce some surprises. Special railway facilities have been arranged for the meeting and an excursion train will leave Auckland at 5.2'2 p.m. on Friday and depart from Rotorua on' the return at 4.30 p.m. on Sunday, so that the occasion will provide an excellent opportunity for sportsmen to make a cheap weekend trip to-the thermal regions. Chief of the seven races is tho Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Hunt Cup, which has attracted 14 acceptors. The class is not strong and few of the candidates have had any recent racing. The topweight, St. Warrigal, had an outing at iillerslie last Saturday, when be led for about two miles among the open steeplechasers, and he should derive sufficient benont from the run to have good prospects in the company he will meet iiei'e. One lautor in lavour of Bt. Warrigal is that h© is a reliable and dashing jumper and ho can be expected to give a good -account of himself. Nukutere failed to ehow anything like his true lorin waen he ruced in June, but may bo more forward now, in wliich case he will be one to be reckoned with. Another likely pair aro Creina'a lung and Wako King. Cieina's King registered a win and a fourtli in the autumn and would only require to repeat his best to take considerable beating. It will be in his lavour that ho will be racing on his home track, and, unless he lacks fitness, he is sure to be solidly fancied. Wako King has had no recent racing, but would make a strong appeal if produced at his best. . ~ _ , , t, • Horses like Star of the East and Prince Ruxus have gone past their best and the likeliest of the others, which include some beginners, is Lrianthain, who notched a win and a second on the flat &t Opotiki in January. He is a five-year-old hftli-brotlier. by t'eramorz, to Simeon and is certainly bred well enough to make a very useful jumper. Little can be said about the rest of the field, although Sir Pathfinder, from W. J McLean's stable, is regarded as promising. Sir Pathrinder is a five-year-old gelding by Lucullus from a Ked Ham luaio and has not raced previously The race u very open for the reason that there is little recent form to give a guide, but some who may be fancied are St. Warrigal. Grantham. Cieina's King and Nukutere.

RICCARTON TRAINING PROSPECTS .OF COTTESMORE RIDERS FOR SATURDAY I [BV TELEGBAFH —OWN CORBKSI'ONDKM] CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday ! Monastic ricked himself while working j on the sand yesterday and will be given, a few weeks' spell, His stablemates, Argentic and Tautbow, are progressing aatisfactorily. . , i ' Argentic has been restricted to roacr exercise lor some weeks past and will enter into serious work again after the Grand National meeting, Tautbow, who was in low condition when he came to luectu"ton from the North Island, is now bearing a robust appearance and will bo in good order to undergo another preparation noon. . High Pitch and Cottesmore were visitors to the Riccarton tracks to-day, both being given strong work on the sand. The former did two rounds and kopt his rider, it. Beale, busy in keeping him in restraint. Cottesmore was a failure at tho Wellington meeting, but there were excuses for him, as, in addition to striking an unsuitable track, ho was left standing on the mark in one of his engagements. Or. his last visit to Kiccarton fit Krister Cottesmore won the Papnuui Handicap, of nix furlongs, on tho first day of the autumn meeting and the Gimcrack Handicap. of six furlongs, carrying 9.7, on the second day. He is engaged in tho Braba--7.011 Handicap on Saturday noxt, and is also in the list for the Winter Cup. On tho firm Riccarton going Cottesmore can he expected to make a far better showing lhan at Trentham. Some of tho riding engagements made for Saturday's programme are n B follows: G. Humphries.—Silver Ring, St. Joan, Fi £' Ellis.—Denise, Shatter, Silver j Kir warn—Poly dora, Verden, Cherry Q T Messervey.—Cranford. Bright Shade. B. Brodle.— Top Bank Marfan Chief. It Bealc Hukln. High Pitch. . A'. Eastwood.—Sppon. Liego l.ord Donnn. ,T. W. Jennings.—Sky Lass, Bell Hill. Turner.—Tentcnll, Nine of Spades. Helen Gold. S Sweet rr Agnes has rejoined T TT. team after her winter spel . She has not grown to any extent. but is a compactlybuilt filly and should develop into a good thrcc-year-old. CAPTAIN BUNCBY FILLY A newcomer - to Ellersl'.e is a rising two-vear-old filly by Captain Bunsby from Churis, who has just been taken in hand by Mr. C. Munro Emanuel. Shu is in the roujdi at present. but is shapely and well grown. As she is one of the first of her sire's progeny to go into training, much interest will be taken in the way she propresses when she is forward enough to begin galloping.
