THRILL FOR LIONS
COLLAPSE OF A BARRIER CIRCUS AUDIENCE STAMPEDES CALCUTTA, July 18 Lions in a circus at Hyderabad had an unexpected thrill when, during a performance, part of an iron barrier separating them from the spectators collapsed. The lions gazed in astonishment at the audience, first at their faces, and then at their disappearing backs, as people made a rush for cover. Spectators climbed tentpoles, rushed to the highest seats in the gallery, and even outside the circus, where they flung themselves into vehicles and urged the drivers to get away as fast as possible. Tho lions continued to stare in astonishment, until their keeper came to their rescue, and shepherded tho frightened animals into the protection of :i cage. Nobody was hurt, in spite of the general stampede.
