WOMEN'S DIVISION
FARMERS' UNION The members of the Towai branch of tho Women's Division h'eld their monthly meeting at Mrs. E. V. Rail's residence. In the absence of Mrs. A. Dawson, sen., through family sickness, Mrs. E. S. Ralls was appointed secretary pro tern. Regrets wero expressed that two of the members had left the district. 1110 squares which had been knitted for tlio community quilt wero produced, and a busy time ensued in planning tho arrangement of them and blending the multi-coloured wools. It was proposed to donate it to a bedridden invalid. Tho competitions were won by Mrs. C. Allan and Mrs. E. V. Ralls. The roll call for August is to take the. form of suggestions for the best way to celebrate the Christmas season for tho young people of the district. This brought the meeting to a conclusion, Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Owens being the hostesses. Ngarua.—At tho July meeting of the Ngarua branch Mrs. A. Donavan presided over a large attendance of members. The resignation of tho secretary, Mrs. Marx, was received with much regret, Mrs. Carter being elected to fill that office. Tho papers read by members 011 the problem of the mentally defective were well received, specially that contributed and read by the president, uho received much applause for her humane view of dealing with this much debated subject. The best plate of tartlets proved very popular. Mrs. Buchanan was first and Mesdames James and Palmer (equal), second. The judge was Mrs. W. Luxton, who also donated tho prize. Mrs. Lewis, of Te Aroha, gave a short and interesting address 011 the human figure and its needs. Tokoroa.—Tho June meeting of the Tokoroa branch was attended by 25 members. Jt was unanimously decided that tho branch should support the retaining of the "creed" in preference to the prayer. Plans were made to organise a clothes drive for the benefit of tho needy in the district. A comprehensive programme for the next three months was drawn up and tea was served by Mesdames Stein, Sloper and Thomson. Tirau.—'Tho July meeting of tho branch was welt attended and Mrs. Mouldey and Miss Withers welcomed as new members. Parcels of clothing for distribution were given by Mesdames Carruth and Wright, and the president made a further appeal for clothing for somo Maori families. It was decided to start a branch library. An interesting demonstration of washing, dyeing and preparing fleeces and of knitting raw wool was given by Mrs. Litchfield, of Waharoa.
