CITY LOAN PROPOSAL
SPECIAL MEETING OF BOARD MAYOR WITHHOLDS COMMENT A special mooting of the Local Government Loans Board will be held in Wellington on Thursday, at the request of the Mayor of Auckland, Mr.'G. W. Hutchison, to consider the Auckland City Council's proposed loan of £113,700 for a comprehensive two years' programme of work under the Local Bodies' Empowering (Relief of Unemployment) Act, 1926. The board had previously indicated its opinion to the City Council that the proposal should be submitted to a poll under the Local Bodies "Loans Act, particularly as the council's ability to proceed under the other Act was limited by the fact that that legislation would expire 011 Jlift 31. The City Council took the view that sufficient time remained to proceed under the Act which will shortly expire, and that one of the objects of the loan proposal—to give work to the unemployed—necessitated the programme being put in hand without the delay involved in taking a poll of ratepayers, which, it has been assumed, would undoubtedly endorse the scheme. It is anticipated the meeting of the Loans Board on Thursday will finally settle the issue. The Mayor said last evening that he would not comment 011 Mr. Coates' statement in view of the fact that the council's case will be stated to the board 011 Thursday. Mr. Hutchison will leave for Wellington to-morrow evening, and he is hopeful that the proposal will be sanctioned by the board before the expiry of the pertinent legislation next Monday.
