WALKER WINS
LIVELY WRESTLING BOUT ENDING IN FOURTH ROUND LOSER FAILS WITH SLAM TWO AMATEURS DISQUALIFIED One of tho liveliest wrestling matches seen in Auckland for somo time took place at the Town Hall last evening, when George Walker defeated Jack Clark by two falls to one. The feature of the contest was tho suddenness with which the second, third and fourth rounds concluded. Following a bright opening, Clark picked his opponent up quickly in the second round and slammed him hard to secure tho first fall. Walker drew even early in the third round with a submission by means of a reverse toehold. Clark again lifted Walker in the succeeding round, and failed to end the jiiatch in his favour by inches only. As Jie was being hurled to the mat, Walker was able to twist himself in the air, with the result that he took the fall slightly on his side. Ho rolled over on top of Clark as soon as they reached the floor and surprised the last-named ith a body press, thus terminating the tout. Clark's exhibition was easily the best given by an opponent, against Walker in the past two seasons, and ho missed a win by a narrow margin. He pleased tho crowd immensely. The Town Hall was filled, and both men were given a fine reception. Mr. H. C. Sidford refereed tho contest and also the amateur preliminaries. In the course of tho second of theso matches the referee had to adopt the unusual course of disqualifying the competitors for conversing with each other whilo lying on tho mat. First Fall to Clark The pair wero evenly matched in weight, Clark scaling list. 61b.. and Walker 14st. 51b. Walker was first on the mat with a headlock, Clark following with a body scissors and then a double arm scissors. The crowd was roused with an exchange of head biit—ting, Clark having tho better of it. Clark broke a wristlock with a head scissors. A lively pace was maintained throughout the opening round. Some sparring excited the spectators at the beginning of the second round. Walker attacked with side headlock throws, but Clark lifted him suddenly and slammed him hard, then gaining the first fall with a press. Walker evened the falls early in tho succeeding round, gaining a submission with a reverse toehold. C'lark tried unsuccessfully for a hammerlock and then for a back-loop slam. He feigned grogginess following a series of side headlock throws, but quickly lifted his opponent for a slam, which he missed in the manner already indicated. Amateur Preliminaries Catch-weight. —J. Young, lOst. 81b., beat F. Crowhurst, lOst. 21b., by two faHs. Tho first, was obtained in the opening round with a combined armbar, arm scissors and press following a head scissors.
