GROWING OF ONIONS PROPOSED SCALE OF DUTIES MEETING LOCAL DEMANDS ASSURANCE OF SUPPLIES r IIV tki.gcikapii—i*iikss association] WELLINGTON, Monday The Franklin and Canterbury Onion Growers' Association, before tho 'l;inff Commission to-day, urged that a slidin" scale of duties be adopted in order to"place the industry on a permanent basis. , It was stated that if a duty on the scale suggested was approved, the association would bo prepared to arrange the growing and cold storage of_ sufficient onions to meet the whole of the Dominion's requirements for the coming season. The association was also prepared to enter into arrangements with merchants and other buyers in the Dominion to supply their requirements throughout the whole year at prices considerably lower than those usually paid for imported onions from September to December. Thii commission also heard a request that the duty on poultry spice from tho United Kingdom be increased from 20 per cent to 50 per cent. Air. G. D. Little applied on behalf of Alctters (N.Z.), Limited, manufacturers of cast-iron porcelain baths, for alterations in the tariff in respect 01 hardware, hollow-ware and ironmongery by an all-round increase of 5 per cent, porcelain and enamel baths to be made a separate item. He said there had beerji a marked decrease in the cost of imported baths since the firm commenced to operate, much greater than the f;ill in price of iron and production costs generally. Mr. E. E. Brooking, managing director of the Kia Ora Galvanising Company, Limited, sought the maintenance of existing duties on buckets, oval baths or washtubs, water cans, rubbish bins, paint drums and wash-up tins, submitting that his company's plant and methods were equal to those of anv overseas factory.
