DOINGS IN AMERICA V BANKER'S RETIREMENT -r, [iHOil OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] SAN FRANCISCO. June 27 Mr. W. A. Mitchell retired on June j 19 as Comptroller of the Foreign De- v partment of the Canadian Bank of Commerce branch in San Francisco, following a service of 46 years. He joined the staff as a junior in 1887, the year after he left Auckland. His father, Mr. R. M. Mitchell, was active at Thames and in Auckland during the Maori War, and his three brothers, Frank (deceased), George and Robert, were well known in printing circles in Auckland and later in San Francisco. Mr. Mitchell retires on a pension and he was the recipient of many evidences of esteem. He is prominent in California's musical circles. Mr. James Wylie, a Rugby footballer, ✓ whose reputation still lingers 'in New Zealand and Australia, lias been coaching and acting as referee at some of the games played in the sport's revival on the Pacific Coast. His figure is as straight as ever, but the grey hair denotes the passing of the years. Mr. Arthur Jarman, formerly of Auckland and a mining engineer in the Waihi and Thames districts, is in business in Oakland, California, after a connection of several years with ono of the largo oil companies. A few months ago the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Jarman was asphyxiated whilo attempting to find a leak in the gas furnace of the home. Mr. T. D. Wilkins, of Auckland, has ' been' telling San Francisco newspapermen that the saddlers of his country say that business is better than it has been for 25 .years. He was supported by Dr. J. B? Barker, veterinary surgeon, of Sydney, who says the horse is proving moro economical than motor vehicles, owing to the latter's taxes and cost of upkeep.
