GRANT FOR LIBRARY

UNIVKHSITY COLLEGE'';- . CARNEGIE CORPORATION FURTHER ADVICE RECEIVED The offer of a grant for library exten< sion at the Auckland University Co!, lego, made two years ago by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, carried a stop farther by a letter from the corporation received at a meeting of the college council yesterday. The letter stated the board of trustees of the corporation had appropriated 15,000 dollars, payable at the rate of 5000 dollars annually, for three yeare, to the Auckland University College for the purchase of books. The retiring president, Sir George Fowlds, said 119 had sent a letter thanking the corporation. " 4"

The corporation's advice follows the offer which it made two years ago. The council was then advised that a grant would probably be available in the next few 3'cars, but that a sudden acquiiri* tion of books often proved a burdoa unless a college were equipped -with a thoroughly trained librarian. The cct« poration said it would consider granting to a person selected by the college a fellowship for one year's study at a recognised school of library science. As a result the college librarian, Miss A. E. Mifiehin, was nominated and granted a fellowship. She left last August to study in the United States and wjll return to Auckland next month.

The letter received by the council yesterday stated the money would fa available upon submission by the council of a plan of operation satisfactory to the executive committee of the corporation. Enclosed with the letter was a general statement concerning the purpose and limitations of the grant, stating tho plan of operation referred to should be based on this general statement; that it would be helpful if the college would keep a separate list of purchases under the grant, 'and make a report, preferably in January of each year, during the period of the grant, with regard to library progress. It was decided to refer the letter to the college library committee and to invite the city librarian, Mr. John Barr, through the City Council, and the chairman of the professorial board, to act in an advisory capacity to tha committee in the matter.
