FALSE PRETENCES
FRAUDS IN AUCKLAND TWO CHARGES ADMITTED FURTHER TERM IN PRISON David Scrogie, who was sentenced last Wednesday to three months' imprisonment (to be concurrent with a sentence then being served) on a charge of false pretences, again appeared in the Police Court at Ncfr Plymouth the next day before Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., on two further charges of falso pretences. The charges related to transactions in the Auckland district in April last. The accused pleaded guilty to both charges and elected to be dealt with summarily. »
Accused was charged that at Otahulin on April 13, with intent to defraud, ho obtained from Albert Brown the sum of £3 3s, tho property of the Passenger Transport by means of a false, pretence, by representing that a cheque drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand at Auckland by F. H. Rose was a good and valid order for that amount.
Scrogie was further charged that on April 29, at Ramarama, with intent to defraud, he obtained from Caroline Ryan tho sum of £1 1' s 6d, the, property of Frank Jowsey, by means of false pretences, namely, by representing that he represented the Scrvico Advertising Company, of Hastings, and that ho would have Frank. Jowsey's business advertised in his company s motor service time-table. Senior-Sergeant 'lurner said that ilia accused called at Mr. .Towsey s place of business, where Miss Ryan was in charge, and represented that he was acting on behalf of a motor transport company operating between Aiicklaiul and Wellington and he wanted Ml. Jowsey to become a subscriber toward the service. He showed a number of a paper purporting to be the names of other subscribers. On Mr. Jowsey s instructions, Miss Ryan paid him £1 17s 6d, for which he gave a receipt. In connection with the other charge it was stated accused went to .Mr. Rose's garage at Point c p he T alie A r said lio represented tlie Service Advwtising Company, of Hastings, and publishing a time-table in which he desired to advertise the services from. Mr. Rose's garage. An advertisement was authorised and a cheque for £o os was given to accused. It was marked "not negotiable." Later, in consequence of what he heard, Mr. Ros9 stopped payment of the cheque and when he next saw the accused told him lie wished to"cancel his advertisement. The accused stated he had just cashed the cheque in the city. This was found to be untrue, but it was found that the accused had gono to Otahuhu afid cashed the cheque with Mr. Albert Brown. - _ The senior sergeant referred to the previous convictions of the accused. In answer to the magistrate, tho accused said the statement made, by the senior sergeant was correct. On one charge tho magistrate entered a conviction and imposed a term of three months' imprisonment, to ba ( cumulative on the sentence at present being served. On the other charge ho was convicted and discharged.
