CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY NEW SOUTH WALES AMATEURS (Received June 18. 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. June 18 Play in the New South Wales amateur golf championship opened yesterday. Notable absentees were Bettington and Whitton. J. Ferrier, regarded as the strongest contender, was beaten by G. R. Smith, 2 and 1. H. W. Hattersley narrowly escaped, only beating G. Capel on the last green, 1 up.
