EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD WHALERS AT RUSSELL The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of June 15. 1883: A cablegram from London, (a ted June 13, states that a Frenchnia i, in attempting to cross the English Ch. nnel in «i balloon, was carried northvard, and descended in the North Sea, i here he was rescued by a passing vessel. Notwithstanding the increase of imputation during the last 12 months the expenditure for the relief of the destitute remains stationary. This is oi e indication of the social prosperity c the working classes, and of work )eing available for all classes. The city surveyor's department is at present engaged on the perm ment levels of Grafton and Karang: hape wards, and plotting part ot the Ponsonby ward. Ihe Russell harbour is quite livt ly at. present. Four American whaler , including the California, have ju.-t arrived from a cruise, being at and or in the offing. They have been fairb S,IC " cessfnl during the past season, an 1 are now refitting and preparing for arothor year's voyage.
