PRESERVING BUSH AREAS

Reference to the magnificent gift of the Waitangi Estate to the nation by the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloo, and Lady Blcdisloe, is made in the annual report of the Auckland district council of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture to bo presented to the annual meeting on Wednesday. The report states that when the first meeting of the Waitangi Trust Board was held at the old Residency, the executive forwarded for planting two oranges budded from the century old tree at Kerikeri, together with six suitable native trees. The report stated the council's scheme for horticultural and agricultural courses at Mount Albert Grammar School, 011 the area of 20 acres provided by the Auckland Savings Bank, had "been adopted. Preliminary work had been carried out on the area for the establishment of a citrus test plot, which had been under consideration for the last six years. Planting would start in tho near future.

Scenery preservation work had been kept steadily in view and visits had been paid to Rangitoto, with a working party, Kawau and Swanson, while arrangements were being made to ascertain bush areas within easy distance of the city which should be preserved. It had been decided to start a bush preservation fund. Suggested activities by the State Forest Service with regard to the Waipoua kauri forest had led the executive, with the assistance of many other bodies, to form the Waipoua Kauri Forest Preservation Committee, which the Commissioner of State Forests, the Hon. 10. A. Ransom, had undertaken to support.
