CAPTURE IN A VILLAGE SIX KILLED IN CONFLICT GRAVE CHARGES PENDING By Telcgri-aph—Press Association—Copyright (Received May 31, 5.5 p.m.) CALCUTTA. May 31 Six lives were lost in capturing Hamid, known as the "terror of the United Provinces," and four of his armed gang, who have been wanted for somo time'in connection with acts of banditry and murder. Hamid was in a village liquor shop drinking with bis associates when he was recognised by a constable. Tho latter raised an alarm and collected a party of villagers, with whom lio returned and surrounded the shop. Hamid and bis followers broke through the cordon and made a desperato effort to reach refugo in tho iunglo. Tho chief bandit fatally shot three of his pursuers, and wounded others. Three of the gang were beaten to death by tho villagers, who were incensed at the loss of their three fellowvillagers. Hamid and four others were captured and will be tried on charges of murder, armed robbery and torture.
