NOTES ON THE RACING
VICTORY FOR MANGU KING PHIAKUO SCORES DECISIVELY HIGH COMMISSIONER AGAIN BY ARCHER v° nly °f the eight runners in the courso P °and^r k £steeplechase completed the wwL ra,co provod easy for King, who was oecond fancy on tho win Mn^ n V * avo ' urito ia th » Place betting.timft J 1 ng ftU <h ° Way and the only : mb h f 6v «f »PP«ared to bo in any trouble was when ho 'went through" the sodwall t the foot of tho straight in tho first round and nearly lost his rider. After that ho was always going comfortably in tho lead and won by fivo lengths from Valpeen. High irltch was 75 yards away third and Standlast wa3 a long way back fourth. Tho mishaps in the race commenced early when Ruby Meteor fell at tho first fence. Golden Vanity and Coachman, were tho next to fall, both going over at tho fence near tho half-mile post, while Gallant Jack went over at the first fence of tho doublo when, running second at the end of tho first round ALangu King risked several fences, but on the whole his jumping was clean and fast Valpeen Jumped well and made a good showing, but High Pitch and Standfast were well beaten. Standfast failed to jump with any confidence and reauiies more experience. Beginning better than on tho first day when he finished strongly' to get fourth" Phiakuo scored a decisive win in tho Trial Handicap, for which Dust Up and Grand City were the favourites. Grand City led early from Substation, Con Fuoco, Phiatuo and Val Watch, and Con Fuoco assumed command at tho top to lend into tho straight from Phiakuo, Grand City. Val Watch, Substation and Tondaleyo. Once in lino for tho post Phiakuo took charge nnd ho went on to win by two lengths from Con Fuoco, who defeated Val Watch bv a nose. Sandy ]Dix was fourth, succeeded by Substation, Revelation. Kind Words and Sir Val.
Prolyxo Beats Speedmint Although ho drew No. 17 at tho barrier Phiakuo was always in tho leading division and had tho measure of the opposition all tho way down the straight. Ho is a bic gelding who has dono little racing and should bo susceptible to a good deal of improvement. Co:a Fuoco showed much more dash than in tiny of his previous races and is on the upgrade. Ynl Watch also shaped well after being rather excitable at the post. Sandy Dix finished on strongly, but Bust Up was never sighted and Grand City faded out in the straight. Speedmint was a hot favourite for tho Waitomo Handicap, but she had to lower her colours .to Prolyxo, who was ridden by K. Voitre. Alloy was first to show out and then Tarporley and Princess Bedo became prominent, only to surrender tho lead along the back to Speedmint and Prolyxo. With half-a-mile covered Prolyxo, on the rails, and Speedmint were together in front and they showed the way into tho straight just ahead of Protomint who had run up on the outside, with Tarporley and Prince Yal next. A furlong from the post there' was little between Prolyxo, Speedmint and Protomint and Prolyxo finished best to win by a neck from Speedmint. Protomint was a length away third and Master Norval was fourth, followed, by Tarporley and Kintt March. Prolyxo ran right up to her _ best form and tli© fact that she had 'the inside running just gavei her the advantage ov£r Speedmint. Tactics differing from the usual were adopted with Speedmint, who was bustled to the front early with the result that she did not finish on as well as sho generally -doe3 when ridden in behind. Protomint, paid n good price for third, but is likely to be nt much shorter odds next time, as he is improving with every gallop Master Noirval ran on to pet fourth and King March shaped very credit ably in his first race for months, Thespis Fails Again
High Commissioner and Thespis Tver* equal favourites on tko win machine for . the Pio Pio Hurdles, and the former had a slight call in the place betting, lhespis led over the first fence and when the field had settled down he was in command from Mia Stella, Free Air, Cruachan and Goodfellow, with the others following m close order. Craachan ran up second along the back and near the five-furlongs post High Commissioner made a. forward move. High Commissioner went to the front at the top and led into the straight from inform, Cruachan, Thespis and Free An:. There was little between High Commiaflioner and Biform at the last fence, but High Commissioner landed m front with a beautiful jump and stalled off Biform to wifa bv half-a-head. Free Air was six lengths away third and True Blood was a moderate fourth. Then followed Cruachan, Careen and winner was responsible for ft good performance and fought on v.lhtb ut. most gameness wlien tackled at the He had a rise of 13lb in weight.from the first day and thoroughly deserved his sue cess. Thespis and Cruachan both failed badly and the former was beaten a ! thTplaced horses in the Hack Handicap, and Sinking Fund, on whom H. N.
