OBITUARY
MR. ERNEST TORRENCE CAREER AS SCREEN ACTOR NEW YORK, May 15 Ernest Torrence, a veteran screen actor, died to-day. He claimed the distinction of having been one of the first talking picture actors 20 years ago. The late Mr. Ernest Torrence was born in Edinburgh in 1876. Part of his education was at Stuttgart, Germany. While there ho was trained for a musical career, and subsequently, as a pianist, ho won the Westminster scholarship in London. 'He then went into comic opera and later into musical comedy. He went to New York to play the Scottish comedian role in "The Only Girl," and stayed there nine years. He made his film debut in 11)22 as the villain in "Tol'able David" and after that achieved great success in leading roles in "The Covered Waggon," "Peter Pan," "The Blind Goddess," "The Great Lover," etc.
