WORK AT RICCARTON SOME SMART GALLOPS GAY CREST IN FINE FETTLE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHRISTCIIURCH. Friday A boisterous north-west gale made matters very unpleasant for the early workers at Riccarton yesterday, clouds of*dust at times obscuring tho horses from view. A head wind for half the circuit of tho tracks also had a serious effect on gallopers, and their performances were much more creditable than those of horses galloped after the breakfast, hour, by which time tho storm had died down. Tho outside of the course proper has been available for the week if required, but there have been no requests for it, trainers preferring the plough and tho No. 6 track. On tho plough, Imperial Spear and Nightly opened proceedings by reeling off five furlongs in 1.3. Cricket Bat ran the first three furlongs of a six-furlong gallop in 38s and completed the journey in I.IG 1-5. fracas ran five furlongs in 1.2, the last half in 495. Princess Argosy went very freely over five furlongs in 1.4 2-5. Zeebruggo finished better than Heather Glow over the final stages of a six-furlong task taking 1.16 3-5. Tout Le Monde was going away from Gay Crest at the end of seven furlongs in 1.32 3-5. Gay Crest is in great order and should earn some money next week. Rocket was not allowed to do his best in recording 1.47 for a mile. Final Shot attracted attention by beating Silent Flight over five furlongs in 1.3 1-5. The Hasquerader sprinted three furlongs in 375. Ho is a stylish galloper, but will require more time. Shatter and Great Star Rebel Song could have improved on his time, 1.29 4-5, for seven furlongs. Shatter, with St. Joan as a mate for five furlongs, was going very easy at tho conclusion of seven furlongs run in 1.30. True Shalt ran six furlongs in 1.1(3 2-5. Ho is likely to contest tho Sockburn Handicap on Monday. Water Polo again beat Elude comfortably over six furlongs in 1.19. Great Star finished two lengths in front of Orand Review at the end of six furlongs in 1.19. Martian Chief showed good form by galloping seven furlongs in 1.30 3-5. Metal Bird finished clear of Robin Hood with Wise Choice beaten off at the end of seven furlongs in 1.30 2-5. Rational 11. and Wealth finished close together after galloping six furlongs in 1.18 2-5. Gaysome did well in covering five furlongs in 1.3. Fleeting Glanoo strode over six furlongs in 1.20 and Silver Sight and Shamata finished up useful tasks by sprinting three furlongs in 395. Best Gallop of Morning On the grass Polydora and Rothen wore practically abreast throughout seven furlongs taking 1.30 3-5. The former may be in want of a race when she is paraded on Monday. Lucky Dive and Niglitguard were together well cloar of Eupa'.or ut the end of six furlongs in 1.10. Ranelagh and Hurlingham took the honours of tbo morning by recording 1.14 1-5 for six furlongs, the last three in 37 l-ss. Both are exceptionally well and. with Rothen, constitute a very useful team for one trainer to saddle up at next week's meeting. Manetho had no trouble in beating Bright Shade over half a mile run in 48 l-ss. Manetho has made much improvement since being trained at headquarters and will be worlh noting in the near future. Juniper strode over six furlongs in 1.18 2-5. A rider has not yet been secured for him for Monday. Tho first, schooling st Riccarton for some months was staged yesterday morning, when Dan Russell (H Turner) wns sent over two hurdles. Riding Engagements B. H. Morris has been engaged for Ruling Light in tho Groat. Faster Handicap and will ride Concentrate in the Great Autumn Handicap. Other riding engagements for Monday's programme aro;— C.
