THURSDAY'S GALLOPS SOME BRILLIANT WORK GOLDEN WINGS' RECORD FIVE Overnight rain rendered the tracks easy at Ellerslie on Thursday, when the course proper, with the poles out 35ft., was in use. and some high-class gallops were recorded. Golden Wings establishing a track record b.v. running five furlongs in 1.1 2-5. Golden Wings, carrying about Sst.. went brilliantly all the way to finish up five furlongs, going strongly, in 1.1 2-5. This is the bast ever registered over the»present •:rnck and it has brought the topweight into strong favour for the Easter Handicap. n I aganolli, carrying more weight than Golden Wings, also galloped remarkably well over five furlongs in 1.2. He did -his work attractively, and, considering his weight, his etfort would be almost equally as good as that of Golden Wings. Another Easter Handicap candidate. Sea .Ruler, went brilliantly to equal Paganelli's lame, 1.2, for five furlongs. He is a lightweight who will now come into favour, particularly as he has a partiality for easy track conditions. Sir Val and Aiguille ran five furlongs in 1.3 1-5. The Easter Handicap candidate moved well but ho is short of fast work and may not be right at his best to-day. Impasto, Rnpper and D'Artagnan began in straggling order at the six furlongs and after going five furlongs Impasto and D'Artagnan, whoso rider lost a stirrup, were eased up. Rapper going on to record 1.19. It was such an uneven stnrt that no real line was obtainable, but all appeared io travel well for five furlongs. Lordly Knight and Chief Cook Catalogue beat Chief Jov over five furlongs in 1.3 2-5 and did his work in'pleasing style. Master Norvril vus going strongly at the end of five furlongs in 1.3. Master Brierlv and Wep Pat. assisted by Kilmuir over the last half-mile, ran soven furlongs in 1.31 2-5. Master Brierly finished impressively. Aga Khan and Gold Trail were going wpll lit the end of seven furlongs in 1.32 15. Both horses could have done n little bettor. Lady. My Money and Gay Broney 51 3-ss. TRIALS AT TAKANINI REREATU'S FINE GALLOP Track conditions at Takanini on Thursday were good. Tho poles on the inside grass were out 12ft. Imperial Prince and Principal were on terms at the end of ft mile in 1.17. Principal sustained no harm from his fall on Tuesday. . " , Gold Pocket. Exaggeration and Greek Gold began as named and finished in fairly close order at the end of five furlongs in 1.2, a very useful effort. CheTry King and Star Artist were on terms at the end of five furlongs in K2 1-5. both juveniles doing their work in pleasinir style. Cherry King has done well since winning at Whangnrci. Rercatu. Foulwind and Royal Artist were at intervals of five lengths at the end of six furlongs, which Rereatu ran brilliantly in 1.14. This colt has been galloping well and lias only io reproduce track form to show un in the Champagne Stakes. Royal Artist is considered a doubtful starter in the Easter Handicap. Kawini ran a mile and a-hnlf on the plough track, tho last mile in 1.5G 2-5. % NOTABLE JUMPING VETERAN KAWINI'S REMARKABLE RECORD Kawini. the veteran of to-day's Brighton Hurdles field, has had a remarkable, although most unlucky, career in important jumping events. Seven years ago he ran second in the Brighton and in 1029 he was third, he has been once second and once third'in the Great Northern Hurdles: twice third in the Great Northern Steeplechase; twice second and onco third in the Wellington Steeplechase and onco second in the Grand National Steeplechase. His stake winnings total £6625. _ . . Now rising 14 years, Kawini is making his f.rst appearance at Ellerslie for two and n-half vears. He competed at Hamilton in November, 1030. and then had a long spell until at Pukekohe last month lie ran fourth in the high-weight event. He made a surprisingly good showing, and. although his great age may tell against, him to-day, he has been working well and there is alwnvs this most important point in his favour—he is a jumper of proved ability. Kawini did not race until he was six years old. in tho H 25-20 season. In all he has started 55 times for eight wins. 14 seconds and 10 thirds, being 23 times unplaced.
