LAKE PUPUKE WATER
PURIFICATION SCHEME EXCAVATIONS COMMENCED Following a decision by the Devonport Borough Council to proceed immediately with the scheme for the purification of the Devonport and Takapuna water supply from Lake Pupuke, excavations have been commenced on the pumping station site where the new plant is to be erected. Tenders for the erection of the plant will be called for shortly. The purification scheme, which will cost under £SOOO, provides for the construction of a settling tank in which the water from the lake will be superchlorinated, and held for about eight hours. The water will then be pumped through spraying nozzles on to stops, for aeration purposes, and filtered through granulated carbon. A recent report by the borough engineer stated that cleaning operations at the reservoirs revealed that a deposit of organic silt, 2in. deep, had collected during the past seven months. The lake level was 49in. below mean high water mark compared with 27in. for the corresponding period last year.
