ATTEMPTED THEFT
SOLICITORS DEFRAUDED PRISON FOR LABOURER A labourer, Arthur William Geoffrey Mold, aged, 29, appeared in the Police Court ou Thursday before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., on charges of attempting to steal two motor tyres, valued at £25, the property of Ferguson and Kew, and obtaining £1 10s from Earl. Kent, Massey and Northeroft, solicitors, b\ r false pretences. Accused was represented by Mr. Noble. Detective-Sergeant McHugh said accused had been associated with two other men who had been convicted last week for an attempted theft at Taupaki. Accused had been in trouble before. The second charge related to an offence committed shortly after accused left prison, where he met another man who said he had some money to collect from the offico of Earl, Kent. Massey ami Northeroft. On being discharged, accused went to the firm's office, and obtained 30s by posing as the other man. Accused said he was not the ringleader in the attempted theft. "It looks as if you are trying to qualify as an habitual criminal," the magistrate said, in sentencing accused to two months' imprisonment on the first charge, and one month on the second, the terms to be cumulative.
