VALUELESS CHEQUES
HOTELKEEPERS VICTIMISED [from OUR OWN' correspondent] HAMILTON. "Wednesday Nine charges of obtaining money totalling £64 by means of valueless cheques were admitted by Percy Hugh Reckenzaun, aged 48, in the Hamilton Police Court to-day. Detective-Sergeant Thompson said that accused was a married man living apart from his wife. Early in December last ho deposited £SO in a bank in tho north. This sum was soon exhausted, and between January 20 and March 27 he continued to issue cheques in different parts of the country. Hotelkeepers were the principal victims. Accused spent £l2O in a few months. He had been convicted twice before for theft. His health was not good. The magistrate, Mr. I ( . W. Platts, said he would sentence accused later. Accused collapsed as he left tho deck, but soon recovered. Sentence was subsequently fixed at a period of reformative detention not to exceed 12 months.
