April G There are indications that Canadian grain, because of its mineral content, may have special advantages over grain grown further south. This was stated by Mr. L. H. Newman, Dominion cerealist, at to-day's meeting of the Grain Research Committee. The report was the result of investigations at Cleveland. GOLD AND SILVER QUOTATIONS IN LONDON (Received April 7, 7.5 p.m.) LONDON, April G Fine gold is quoted to-day at £6 0s 9sd an ounce, compared with £6 Is yesterday. Silver is quoted at 17 7-16 d an ounce spot and 17$ d forward, compared with 17 5-16 d and 17|d yesterday. The quotation for silver at per line ounce is 18 13-16 d, compared with 18 11-16 d yesterday. ONEHUNGA BUILDING ANNUAL MEETING HELD The annual meeting of the Onehunga Perpetual Land, Building and Investment Society was held last evening. The report of the directors, recommending a 5k per cent dividend, and the "balance-sheet, details of which were published yesterday, were adopted. The retiring directors, Messrs. I. .T. Sutherland, G. Vauso and M. Robb, were re-elected. Mr. H. J. Davies was re-elected chairman. OSWALD M. SMITH, LTD. AUCKLAND BUSINESS ENDS Oswald M. Smith and Company, Limited, whose head office is in Dunedin, has withdrawn from the grocery business in the Auckland district. The company was formerly associated with Marriott's, Limited, in the retail business, which will be continued by the recently-formed company, Marriotts Stores, Limited. Tho wholesale stock has been acquired by L. D. Nathan and Company, Limited. LOWER DIVIDEND DUNEDIN TRAM COMPANY A dividend of 8J per cent was adopted by shareholders of the Duncdin and Kaikorai Tramway Company this week. This compares with 10 per cent last year, this rato having been maintained since 1926. At the annual meeting the chairman said traffic receipts had been steadily going down. It was not since 1920 that the company had had such low receipts from the passenger traffic. STOCK SALES FAT SHEEP AT GISBORNE [by telegraph—own correspondent] GISBORNE. Friday A i»slight improvement was noted in fat slieep prices at the Matawhero stock sale to-rlny. Quotations were:—Fat cattle: Good Quality cows, 47s Gd to 52s Gd; veal era; to 30s; Jersey and Jersey-cross steers, to 655; Jersey cows, to 37s Gd; heifers, to 40s. Fat sheep: Ewes sold from 4s lid to 5s 10d: wethers, 10a 5d for prime heavy; others, to 9s Id; lambs, 7s to 8s sd; two-tooth owes, 7s fld to 9s; second grade fat ewes. 3s lid to 4s Id. Store sheep: The tendency of tho market was easier. Empty ewes made 3s to 4s; good condition ewes, 4s 7d to 7s 4d; young ewes, 7s 6d to 9s 6d: wethers. 8s to 9s 7d; lambs. 4b 9d to 6s 9d. VALUES AT OPOTIKI [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] OPOTIKI. Friday Dalgety and Company, Limited, report that at their usual monthly stock sale at Opotiki tho offeriug comprised a fair number of sheep and a full yarding of cattle. Sheep mot u brisk sole, but cattle values were lower. However, vendors met the market and with the exception of one line of steers everything changed hands nt unction. Quotations:—Sheep: Medium fa"t wethers, 10s lOd to lis Id; two and fourtooth wethers, 9s sd; medium four-tooth wethers, 9s 2d; two-tooth wethers, 8s 2d; small two-tooth wethers, to 7s 9d; mixed aged ewes, 5s 7d to Gs 4d; small store lambs, to 4s lid: culls. 3s 9d. Cattle: Fat heifers, £2 lis; light fat Hereford heifers, 39s to £2 lis; ordinary fat cows, to £2 Is; fat Jersey cows, to £1 12s; light fat steers, £2 to £2 sb; kiliable, Jersey Hteers, £1 10s: boner cows, to 22s Gd; cows and calves, to £2 4s; potter bulls, to £4 4s. The Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, reports having had a fair yarding of sheep and an extra largo yarding of cattle. Values showed a decided drop on March rates. Prices wore:—Sheep: Lambs, fair quality. 5s to Gs sd; fat i wethers, 10s 4d; aged ewes, to 7s. Weaner pigs: 7s to 9s.
