FOOD FOR UNEMPLOYED
PRODUCE FROM DOMAIN SUCCESS WITH VEGETABLES SOIL VERY SUITABLE Practically the maximum output is being obtained from the plot, of ground in the Auckland Domain which has been cultivated by relief workers as a vegetable garden. The scheme was introduced i toward the end of last year under an arrangement with the Unemployment Board by which registered unemployed are provided with work in this highly productive manner. The first crop-was taken ■ in December and since then the area has been brought under close cultivation, with the result that large quantities of excellent vegetables are now available for distribution to families of relief workers who are employed in country camps. The development of the garden has been carried out on a large scale, an average of about 25 men being engaged. Over two acres of land have been broken in and the soil has proved very suitable. Ten thousand cabbage plants, 1000 tomato plants, 6000 lettuces and an acre of swedes, as well as many other varieties, have been planted. The crop so far has included four tons of potatoes, over 200 sacks of cabbages, one ton of cucumbers, more than 25001b. of beans, and 20001b. of tomatoes. Other crops, such as carrots and parsnips, are being grown, as well as red and silver beet and leeks in large quantities. The crops from this garden are sent to the meat pool in Karangahape Road and are distributed to the families of the married men on camp work. These families buy their weekly meat supplies at the depot and are given a free issue of vegetables.
