SIR ALEXANDER GRAY
LAW SOCIETY'S TRIBUTE Warm congratulations upon the honour recently conferred upon him by the King were extended to Sir Alexander Gray, K.C., at the annual meeting of the council of the New Zealand Law Society held in Wellington. Mr. H. F. Johnston, K.C., expressed the congratulations of the society to the president, Sir Alexander Gray, upon his knighthood. Mr. Johnston said there was no need to descant upon the great work done for the profession by Sir Alexander, and it was therefore all the more gratifying to see that he was described in the " London Times as president of the New Zealand Law Society. Sir Alexander's life and conduct were such as to make him singularly fitted for the office -of knighthood, and legal practitioners-: throughout New Zealand joined in congratulating him and in wishing him many years in which to enjoy the honour. Mr. N. G. Armstrong, president of the Wanganui District Law Society, expressed the gratification of the country societies at the distinction conferred upon the president of the New Zealand Society, and Mr. A. M. Goulding, president of the Auckland society, added the congratulations of his society, saying that the phrase "trusty and well-beloved," • which he understood was generally usedin the patent of knighthood, exactly expressed tho profession's sentiments toward Sir Alexander. In replying, Sir Alexander saicl lie regarded the knighthood as having been.', bestowed as a compliment to the legal profession. He was naturally very pleased at tho distinction and much touched l>y the many congratulatory messages received. Sir Alexander was re-elected president for tho ensuing year.
