MONUMENT REPAIRED
OMEMORIAL AT PAPAKURA SPECIAL DRESSING APPLIED Restoration treatment has been carried out on the Papakura war memorial monumont, on which signs of deterioration recently appeared. The monument now presents a greatly improved appearance, At a meeting of the Papakura Town Board on Monday evening, the chairman of the Parks and Reserves Committee, Mr. G. Kerr, reported that the memorial had been thoroughly cleaned and the stone treated with a special dressing designed to chock corrosive action. The work had taken a week, but wet weather had seriously interfered with it. During the treatment the discovery was made that the stone had already had .1 number of defective places treated with cement. None of these patches aro found on the figure of tho soldier, but the lion at the baso shows several small cemented patches on tho head. Tho memorial was erected by the people of the Papakura and Karaka districts in 1921. It is constructed of Oamaru stone, which was recently the subject of adverse criticism, it being contended that it is unsuited to tho Auckland climate.
