THE WOOL SEASON
THIRD NAPIER SALE BEST QUALITY SOUGHT appreciation in value [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] NAPIER, Tuesday The third wool sale of the season at Napier was held to-day, when a total of 25,048 bales was submitted to a full bench of buyers. The quality of most of the lots was below that offered at the last saleThere appeared to be an over-supply of 40-44's, 44-46's, while in a fair amount of the wool there was evidence of kemp. At the outset the sale was characterised by little animation and prices were on a par to a farthing and sometimes a halfpenny lower than those for the January offering, which may be accounted for by the heavier condition of the wool. As the sale proceeded the bidding became more spirited and the cpmpotition keener. Compared with the last Napier sale wools of 50's and better quality generally appreciated by fully a halfpenny, but all average wools depreciated slightly. The wools in greatest demand were good lambs, and best pieces and necks. These were keenly competed for by Continental buyers, whose activities were to the growers' advantage, as they lifted most of the lots. Bradford purchased most of the fleece wools, but her competition for finer styled lots was outstayed by that of her competitors. Inferior and shabby lots failed to attract buyers' interest and in many cases sales were made to the only bid offered. Fleece wools generally were carrying a fair amount of condition and any depreciation in values was compensated for in the weight. In most of the catalogues passings wero infrequent. COMPETITION IN SYDNEY MARKET FIRM YESTERDAY (Received February 14, 0.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 14 At the Sydney wool salas to-day 9278 bales were offered and 8396 were sold. Also 528 bales were sold privately. The market was firm at the previous day's rates for all descriptions. Yorkshire and Continental buyers were the principal operators. Greasy Merino sold to 19J,d.
