TOWN'S WEDDING DOWRY

The Rothesay Town Council have awarded tho Bute wedding dowry to Miss Ellen Brougham, of Ashfiold, Rothesay, and Miss Catherine McLachlan, of Callowgate, Rotlibsay. Each receives a sum of about £4B. This dowry was founded for the benefit of poor Rothesay -girls many years ago by the Marquis 1 of Bute on the occasion of his silver wedding. He stipulated that the reigning provost should attend the dowry weddings in person, tell the story of the dowry, read the Scripturo account of the wedding in Cttna of Galilee, and then liand over the dowry money.
