UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY

CONVICTION OF MANAGER DEFAULT BY MEMBER OF STAFF A charge of employing a person who was in default with the payment of an instalment of the unemployment levy was preferred against Ernest Albert Crossley, laundry manager, in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. Mr. Glaister represented defendant. An inspector said that when approached in the matter, defendant said he did not know his employee had not paid the levy. The man concerned later paid his arrears. Defendant said he checked the levy payment of the outside staff, but he trusted the indoor staff to pay without supervision. Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay the costs.
