UNIFORM INCREASES FIXED ACTION BY RETAILERS An increase in the retail prices for pipe and cigarette tobaccos is to he made hy the members of the Auckland Hairdressers and Tobacconists' AsfOciation almost iinmediately, according to the secretary of the association, Sir. L. Cocks, who said yesterday that the increase would amount to 3d 011 the 2oz. tin in the case of imported tobaccos arid 2d per 2oz. on local tobacco. Mr. Cocks said the association had approached every member of Parliament by telegram urging that the action of the Government in imposing a duty of 8d a lb. on tobacco be reconsidered as, with the addition of the 5 per cent sales tax. the prices which would have to be charged would ruin many businesses, H? pointed out that when the rate of exchange was raised recently retail prices were not altered, as stocks in hand were not subject to the impost. However, the new stocks had to bear it, and, in addition, had to be loaded with the extra duty and the soles tax.
