DEARER PETROL
TO-DAY'S NEW KATES INCREASE OF 4d A GALLON EXCHANGE ADDED TO TAX All service stations and garages in the city and suburbs will come into line to day and increase the price of first grade petrol to 2s 4d a gallon. Second-uradc spirit will be retailed at 2s 3d. With the announcement on Thursday morning of the increase in the petrol tax by 3d, most service stations added 3d to their selling price for all grades. The prices charged varied a little owinc to the existence of a slight measure of pricecutting Formerly the resellers had agreed to h fixed price of 2s a gallon for first grade and Is lid for second grade, but some of them were selling at Id a gallon below those prices. Yesterday these garages were selling at 2s 2d and 2s Id, while the remainder were charging 2s 3d and 2s 2d. An announcement was made yesterday by the oil companies that an extra penny a gallon would be added t<2 tho wholesale prices of petrol to cover part of the extra burden occasioned by the higher exchange. Hitherto, the oil companies have been carrying the exchange impost, lut they have now decided to pass portion of it on to the resellers. The position wag. considered at a meet-, iug of the resellers yesterday, when it was decided to add the Id exchange and the 3d tax to the agreed prices of 2s and Is lid, so that from to-day all service stations are to charge 2s 4d for first grade and 2s 3d for second grade. To those who were getting their motor spirit, at the cut rate the increase will amount to 5d a gallon.
